You’ve got a tattoo scab, and you’re tempted to pick it, but that’s the first mistake you need to avoid. Instead, you’ll let it heal naturally, protect it from water and friction, and moisturize it properly while watching for warning signs.
These three steps aren’t complicated, but skip any one of them, and you risk patchy ink, infection, or worse scarring than you bargained for.
Here’s how you do it right.
Don’t Pick Your Tattoo Scab: Let It Heal Naturally (1–2 Weeks)
You’ll avoid complications if you resist picking, scratching, or peeling. Pulling scabs early removes ink, causes patchy color, and increases scarring risk. When itch strikes, don’t pick; apply a thin layer of fragrance-free moisturizer instead.
Resist picking, scratching, or peeling to protect your ink and prevent patchy color and scarring.
2. Clean Gently, Dry Completely
During tattoo aftercare, wash twice daily with lukewarm water and mild fragrance-free soap. Pat dry completely; don’t rub.
Loose, soft clothing protects the scab from accidental loosening before the skin underneath heals.

Protect Your Scab From Water, Friction, and Infection

Since water softens scabs and invites infection, you’ll need to make sure your tattoo stays dry throughout healing. Avoid soaking your healing tattoo in baths, pools, or hot tubs. When you shower, use lukewarm water briefly, then gentle tap with a clean cloth. Don’t rub the tattoo scabs.
Wear Loose Clothing
Choose loose clothing to reduce friction and moisture buildup. Tight fabrics can lift scabs prematurely and delay your progress. Cotton works best for breathability.
Maintain Proper Tattoo Care
Clean only when necessary, using mild, fragrance-free soap. Rinse quickly, gentle pat dry, and leave scabs undisturbed. This supports ideal Aftercare Instructions.
Monitor for Complications
Watch closely for signs of infection: increasing swelling, spreading redness, fever, or pus. Seek medical care promptly if symptoms worsen. Your vigilance ensures safe, complete healing.

Moisturize Your Tattoo Daily and Watch for Warning Signs

Once your tattoo forms a protective scab, keeping it slightly supple becomes essential for proper healing. You will apply a very thin layer of fragrance-free moisturizer, often petroleum-jelly-based or cocoa-butter-type, one to two times daily during the first week. This prevents scabs cracking and supports even healing.
Keep tattoo scabs slightly supple with a thin layer of fragrance-free moisturizer applied once or twice daily to support even healing.
Use moisturizer sparingly. Over-moisturizing softens scabs prematurely, causing them to fall off early. This risks disrupted ink and delayed healing.
You must watch for warning signs. Contact a clinician if your tattoo becomes more swollen or increasingly red, develops hot or throbbing pain, or shows red streaking beyond the tattoo. Do not wait these out.
Seek medical advice immediately upon noticing thick discolored fluid, white or yellow or green pus, fever, or abnormal shivering. These indicate possible infection requiring prompt treatment.
